호수 긁는 사람들

‘2014 년 겨울, 잊혀져 가는 일본의 어느 한 동네 사람들과 저항의 의미로 아무리 긁어도 긁히지 않는 얼린 호수의 물을 긁으러 갔었습니다. 표면은 녹아 다시 우리의 흔적을 사라지게 하고 저항했던 그 흔적은 아쉽게도 우리만 알고 기억합니다.' (백현주)

저 항하는 행동은 현실 안에서 시간이 지날수록 그 표면적인 형태가 없어지고 잊혀진다. 저항이 반복 되어도 사회의 구조, 즉 환경이 변하지 않으면 사라짐은 지속 된다. ‘호수 긁는 사람들’은 2014년 일본에서 진행된 프로젝트의 연결점으로 새로운 구성의 설치, 영상, 퍼포먼스로 구성된다. 작가는 작업을 통해 시간의 흐름에 대한 저항을 기억하는 사람들, 어떤 형식이나 환경에 맞춰 자신들의 변형을 기억하거나 저항 혹은 방어를 했는지에 대한 부분을 보여주고 있다.

'So there was. People were here, made scratches on the frozen lake one winter.
When the season with sunshine and warmer breeze comes, it will be gone.
Even if the same things happen, it will be gone again anyway.

Our environment does not alter and our memories remain. Our resistance does not leave a physical mark. The resistance repeats itself only to continue fading, as the social structure and the environment persist. ‘Lake Scratchers’, is a project executed in Japan in 2014. It is presented in connection with Space One with a new construction of performance, video and installation. This project shares the memories of those resisting the flow of time and the changes made to adapt to the environment.

작가 소개:
백현주는 멜버른과 글라스고에서 순수예술을 전공했다. 사람과 사람이 모여 사람들이 되는 과정에 집중하며 거기에서 파생되는 이야기와 시간성을 주로 다룬다. 그러한 과정을 통해 작업 내에서 소통자와 생산자 (관객과 참여자)를 동일시 만들며 우리를 구성하는 방식이 어떠한가를 시각적으로 표현해 내고자 한다. 이는 주로 프로젝트성 작업으로 풀어내며 글라스고, 도쿄, 파리, 서울, 레이크야빅, 바르셀로나, 부산, 군산, 광주 등지에서 보여졌다. 현재 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시에서 작업하고 있다.

Artist Intro:
Heaven Hyunjoo Baek studied fine art in Melbourne and Glasgow. She has worked and shown in multiple cities including Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, Barcelona, Busan, Gunsan and Gwangju. She visualizes the process in which people come together and become a community of people, dealing with the timely narratives within the process. She is currently in Goyang residency program supported by MMCA.
